A combined hardware and software offering from Accellion looks to enhance the management of electronic messaging systems by storing e-mail attachments of more than 1MB on caching appliances and giving recipients a link to the attachment rather than the attachment itself.
Version 3.5 of Accellion Attachments, which was released last week, features an attachment fingerprint capability that uniquely links an e-mail message with an attachment, providing proof that the contents of an attachment have not been changed. A new attachment-harvesting feature removes attachments from existing e-mails and replaces them with a secure link, reducing storage requirements.
A bill-back interface in Attachments 3.5 allows administrators to create and manage charge-back grids for billing clients or associating a client number with an attachment as well as allowing IT departments to track e-mail usage and allocate costs of IT resources among departments.
