There are plenty of ways to capture an organizations employee structure, but visualizing and sharing that work force data can be cumbersome with traditional productivity tools. HumanConcepts OrgPlus Enterprise makes it easier to effectively work with human resources data across an organization through a Web interface.

Pricing for OrgPlus Enterprise starts at $8,000 for a 1,000-user license, with the product costing as little as $2 to $3 per user in volume. OrgPlus Enterprise Version 2.6 began shipping in February, as did Version 6 of HumanConcepts desktop products: the $190 OrgPlus Standard and the $295 OrgPlus Professional.

The company also introduced a freely downloadable reader for viewing org charts created with OrgPlus Enterprise and the desktop products. The reader provides a way to share information throughout an organization without requiring expensive tools such as Microsofts Visio.

OrgPlus Enterprise essentially functions as a graphical human capital management reporting tool. The desktop products can be used to provide managers with a means of manipulating reported data for salary planning and realigning teams.

During tests, eWEEK Labs liked the way OrgPlus Enterprise abstracted HR data to present information graphically, either in org chart or tree format. The system is limited to information a company decides to pull from its HR system, such as title, reporting structure, skills, hire date and salary structure. To make informed decisions around organizational structure, we found it useful to view a wide range of data.

Because of the sensitivity of HR data, products in this category need a good security model. We feel that OrgPlus Enterprises administrative tools offer a good level of protection for important data.

Data management is secured through views, roles and user rights. We could create templates for managing data views that focused on particular slices of HR information, such as salary, succession plans or skills. Roles allowed us to define the type of user who could see a particular view, and, with some additional rules, we could further limit the data that users could access.

Administrators can use existing company templates with OrgPlus Enterprise, or they can design templates directly in the administrative interface by selecting fields from imported HR data or through the OrgPlus desktop client. The client and OrgPlus Enterprise share a common XML schema for creating templates, simplifying the sharing of templates across applications.

Although we found managing templates and security straightforward, the expertise of an HR or business analyst will likely be required to maintain good template design and security practice.
