Human Concepts OrgPlus 5.0 lets companies illustrate chains of command that are too complicated for apps such as Microsoft Office or Visio.

OrgPlus, which shipped in July, is available in a $495 Professional version, which integrates with enterprise databases, and a $189 Standard version. Upgrades for either are $99.

Using OrgPlus 5.0, I found that even those with no art skills could quickly put together a polished organizational chart. The programs data import wizard makes it easy to import data in plain-text, Excel, XML and OPX (OrgPlus) formats.

Using the chart templates provided, I built an eWEEK Labs org chart—complete with contact information—in 10 minutes. The templates allow plenty of flexibility for the look and feel of each box.

It took a bit of time to get used to the interface and to set up associations among editors and Labs analysts, but it was easy to add links to Web pages and e-mail and to import photos.

OrgPlus Professional can connect to human resource databases via LDAP, ODBC, Oracle, SAP or PeopleSoft adapters or to a spreadsheet. Chart data can be refreshed on a predefined schedule—an especially handy feature for large organizations.

A new print preview function allows you to check work before printing or publishing a chart.
