Today’s topics include the updated Outlook for iOS, Samsung is offering iPhone users a 30-day test drive of its latest Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 smartphones, Google is giving the industry another glimpse of Jupiter networking infrastructure, and it appears likely that Microsoft will introduce an updated Surface Pro tablet in October.

Microsoft seems determined to eliminate whatever hurdles may stifle collaboration among users of the company’s mobile apps. The latest move is updating its Outlook for iOS suite so that it handles Office files better, providing a more seamless experience for users.

Tapping on Outlook attachments now prompt them to open in their respective apps, like Word, Excel or PowerPoint, allowing users to quickly view and edit Office documents.

Samsung is offering an Ultimate Test Drive program to Apple iPhone owners to entice them to switch to one of Samsung’s latest Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 smartphones, which officially went on sale Aug. 21.

Any iPhone owner can participate in the Ultimate Test Drive after paying a $1 fee and registering using their iPhone on the program’s Website. Participants can choose one of the two phones and will also receive an activated SIM card and a step-by-step instruction guide.

They then have 30 days to choose whether they will buy the smartphone after the test or if they will return it, according to the company.

Over the past 10 years, Google has been building out its own homegrown networking infrastructure that it needed to move the massive numbers of workloads between the hundreds of thousands of servers running in its data centers.

The tech industry knew that Google was developing its own networking technology, and that work helped fuel the software-defined networking (SDN) movement that is quickly reshaping the networking market today.

However, for the most part, Google engineers kept secret the details of what they were building, seeing their networks as a competitive advantage in a hyperscale industry that includes the likes of Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.

But now, Google executives have recently posted blogs and presented papers that describe some of Jupiter’s technical details.

Considering it made its official debut well over a year ago, Microsoft’s well-received Surface Pro 3 tablet is due for a refresh.

According to WPDang, a Chinese technology news site, Microsoft will unveil its successor—along with several other Windows 10 devices and a couple of surprises—in an early October event.

According to the site and mounting rumors, Microsoft is preparing to take the wraps off the Windows 10-powered Surface Pro 4 at the event.

Expected to largely carry forward the look and feel of the previous version, rumors indicate that the productivity-focused tablet may get a significant performance increase, courtesy of Intel’s latest Skylake processor technology.
