Veritas Technologies on Feb. 14 released CloudPoint 2.0, the latest edition of its snapshot-based data protection software.

Veritas, which has been on its own as a private company for three years since its 10-year “marriage” to Symantec ended in 2015, thus rolled out its biggest news since its Vision conference last fall.

CloudPoint 2.0 features new-generation snapshot management and orchestration technology that uses Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud native snapshots. By adding extensive data-protection capabilities, it gives users new ways to replicate, search and classify their data.

This latest integration with Azure builds on a strategic partnership between Microsoft and Veritas created in 2017. Veritas previously announced 360 data management capabilities that are focused on helping customers extract more value from their data.

Automates Both Data Discovery and Protection

CloudPoint 2.0 also automates discovery and protection of Google cloud workloads. With CloudPoint, Veritas brings application consistency to Google Cloud Platform’s Persistent Disk snapshots, indexing for single file restores, replication for disaster recovery readiness and industry-leading search capabilities that make it easy to find and delete personally identifiable information (PII) to help meet stringent global regulatory requirements.

As more enterprises make the move to the cloud for their core infrastructure, data analytics and machine learning capabilities, they also need data protection and recovery tools that not only work in the cloud but can also keep up with the demands of business. CloudPoint 2.0’s snapshot approach is designed to go beyond basic backup and recovery, the company said.

In storage snapshots, whenever a file is modified, the storage blocks associated with that file are not overwritten. Instead, new storage blocks are created and the pointers are updated to point to the new storage blocks. If a rollback is required, then the software is able to determine which storage blocks were used at a particular point in time and then use those storage blocks to roll back the system.

      UI is Easy to Use

Integrated with Azure and Google Cloud, CloudPoint 2.0 is built from the ground up for multi-cloud environments; the solution is highly flexible and supports a wide array of next-generation cloud-based workloads.

This latest integration with Azure builds on a strategic partnership between Microsoft and Veritas created in 2017. Veritas previously announced 360 data management capabilities that are focused on helping customers extract more value from their data.

      Cloud-integrated Snapshots Provide Data Protection

CloudPoint 2.0 has an easy-to-use, self-service dashboard, Veritas said. Key benefits include:

      • Finding data with ease: CloudPoint 2.0 includes extensive cataloging capabilities that enable granular recovery of data. Customers can use the snapshotting technology to find specific pieces of information and restore it in seconds—right down to a single file.
      • Advancing disaster recovery: Organizations can easily replicate data between regions of the same cloud (intra-cloud replication), advancing disaster recovery efforts. Customers can also set policies so that snapshots are taken automatically at set intervals.
      • Helping to ensure compliance: Customers can easily search data, deploy classification tags and quickly find and delete personally identifiable information (PII), which is critical as companies globally adhere to strict compliance regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into international effect May 25.
      • Supporting popular workloads and multi-cloud/hybrid-cloud environments: CloudPoint 2.0 supports a wide array of workloads and applications, including Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, VMware and Oracle. It also supports an array of multi-cloud environments, giving customers choice with consistent data protection alternatives across the board with just one intuitive, centralized dashboard.
      • Leveraging a hybrid model: Existing customers can integrate Veritas NetBackup software with CloudPoint to extend NetBackup snapshot management capabilities in the data center and bridge support to Azure.

CloudPoint 2.0 is available globally through Veritas and its worldwide channel partners, with one freemium tier and two pricing tiers based on an annual subscription model. It can be deployed into Azure environments directly from the Azure Marketplace.

CloudPoint 2.0 is part of the Veritas Technology Ecosystem program. Through this program, partners can certify their solutions on CloudPoint and attract customers moving to the cloud.
