Adobe Systems announced May 3 that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Scene7, an on-demand media software company that provides businesses with on-demand platforms for imaging, cataloging and messaging.

The acquisition, expected to close by the end of May, will enable Adobe to offer its users Scene 7s publishing services, which include dynamic imaging, eCatalogs, product configurators, targeted email and print and image management.

Dynamic imaging services from Scene7 provides businesses with tools for sizing and editing, zooming and panning, color swatching, evideos, and templating. Ecatalogs enable businesses to create interactive versions of their print catalogs and brochures while also allowing businesses to integrate the catalog within their company website.

The targeted e-mail and print service allows businesses to personalize their images, messages and graphics while the image management service enables companies to send out pre-approved images to channels and partners.

Companies that use Scene7s on-demand media software include Sears, Lands End, Harrods, Macys, Office Depot, and Levi Strauss & Co.

“This acquisition will help Adobe build out a robust Internet infrastructure, allowing us to further develop Scene7s brand-name customer list and accelerate the online availability of technologies relied on by millions of creatives worldwide,” John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at San Jose, Calif., Adobe, said in a company statement.

The acquisition also calls for most of Scene7s employees to join Adobe, with CEO Doug Mack taking the position of vice president of Creative Solutions Services at Adobe.

“Adobe is the ideal company to speed the development and worldwide distribution of our rich media solutions,” Mack, CEO of the Novata, CA-based Scene 7, said in a separate company statement.
