Borland Software Corp. announced new versions of its Java application development environment and Optimizeit performance management tool Tuesday, among a number of new tools for creating and deploying applications and Web services.

The Scotts Valley, Calif., company announced JBuilder 8 and Optimizeit Suite 5. JBuilder 8 features a number of new enhancements, including support for the Jakarta Struts open-source Web development framework, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) unit testing, debugging and code management enhancements, as well as support for Java 2 Standard Edition 1.4, JavaServer Pages, servlets, Web services and XML, the company said.

Tony de la Lama, vice president and general manager of Java solutions at Borland, said, in a statement, that JBuilder 8 “is designed for ease of use, supports every major operating system and is integrated with the latest versions of all industry-leading application servers.”

Dirk Corburn, director of Java and XML research at International Data Corp., in Framingham, Mass., said Borlands “platform independent” products enable developers to take advantage of existing systems when building applications for the enterprise.

Borlands Optimizeit 5 features a new Automatic Memory Leak Detector and new support for IBMs AIX and Hewlett-Packards HP-UX operating systems, the company said.

Also on Tuesday, CollabNet Inc., of Brisbane, Calif., announced an enhanced relationship with Sun Microsystems Inc. CollabNet will port its SourceCast Collaborative Software Development Environment to Suns Solaris operating environment. In addition, developers using Suns Sun ONE Studio for Java suite of tools will be able to access the SourceCast code repositories, the company said.

In other Web services related news, Pittsburgh-based LogicLibrary Inc. announced Logidex 1.4, a new version of its software asset management and reuse platform that supports Web services development. Logidex has a software development asset management engine that maps relationships among various software assets, including code libraries, software components and XML schemas, the company said.

Computer Associates International Inc., of Islandia, N.Y., announced two new tools: CA Advantage 2E 8.0 and Advantage Plex 5.1. Both products create EJBs from IBM iSeries400 application designs and Windows designs, the company said. Advantage Plex automates Java 2 Enterprise Edition development. Advantage 2E features change management and data management tools.

San Francisco-based Blue Titan Software Inc. announced that the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) has standardized on the Blue Titan Network Director, a Web services management solution, to manage the SDSCs Web services infrastructure.

Blue Titans solution enables SDSC to link with other government and academic supercomputing environments through Web services, said Chaitan Baru, co-director of SDSCs Data and Knowledge System program.
