Cloud-based practice management, electronic health record (EHR), and medical billing software and services provider CareCloud and the University of Miami School of Businesses Administration announced a partnership to foster healthcare talent and innovation in South Florida.

The two organizations teamed up to launch CareCloud Scholars, a program that helps graduate students to engage in, and provide insight into, South Florida’s healthcare community in an effort to support its development as a hub for the industry.

The program underscores CareCloud’s focus on promoting health care IT innovation in South Florida and extending Miami’s leadership as an emerging hub.

“As a Miami-based company, we are very committed to helping the South Florida business community retain the exceptional talent that already exists here,” Albert Santalo, president and CEO of CareCloud, said in a statement. “Through our partnership with the University of Miami School of Business, we are able to reach local college students and inform and inspire them to pursue careers in their own backyard, while simultaneously encouraging the development of our local ecosystem.”

Representatives from the business school reviewed hundreds of applications from graduate students in its engineering and healthcare programs, and then selected 100 finalists based on essay and survey feedback.

These finalists will be asked to complete an essay question about their perceptions of the impact of technology in improving healthcare, as well as share their insights of the attractiveness of the healthcare hub in South Florida as a base for their future career development.

“We’re delighted to collaborate with CareCloud on this initiative, which will enable our students to interact with the leadership of a fast-growing firm that is driving innovation in the health sector,” Steven Ullmann, director of the Center for Health Sector Management and Policy at the UM School of Business, said in a statement. “As CareCloud Scholars attending the conference, our students will also have a wonderful opportunity to gain insight about the business of health care and network with industry professionals.”

CareCloud will sponsor the finalists to attend the School’s healthcare impact conference, The Business of Health Care: Bending the Cost Curve, later in the month, preceded by a special session with Santalo and the company’s vice president of marketing, Joseph Sawyer.

The January conference will feature speakers such as Olympia Snowe, former U.S. Senator, Diane Rowland, executive vice president of Henry J Kaiser Family Foundation and James Winkler, senior vice president at Aon Hewitt, among others.

CareCloud recently partnered with ZocDoc, a service that helps patients receive faster access to care and optimizes doctors’ schedules, are partnering to help patients book appointments.

ZocDoc houses a real-time database of available doctors’ appointments, and more than 4 million patients use ZocDoc each month to find a nearby, in-network doctor and instantly book appointments online. The free service for patients is live in more than 1,900 cities, covering 40 percent of the U.S. population.
