    OASIS to Advance E-Business Architecture

E-business standards consortium OASIS, which stands for the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, on Wednesday announced its plans to further develop an electronic business architecture.

The namesake Electronic Business Service Oriented Architecture, or ebSOA, will build on ebXML and other Web services technology for its business architecture.

ebXML, started by OASIS and another standards body, UN/CEFACT [the United Na-tions Center for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business], is designed to enable businesses to transact using XML-based messages. The emerging standard provides an infrastructure for data communication interoperability, a semantics framework, registry and repository that helps companies find each other electronically and agree to business.

OASIS will use version 1.04 of the ebXML Technical Architecture as a basis for describing a service-oriented architecture and incorporate technical work done by other OASIS groups, officials said.

Much of the initial work will center on determining how various ebXML and Web service components work together as a system, according to Duane Nickull, the proposed chairman of the ebSOA Technical Committee and a representative of Adobe Systems Inc., one of the groups founding companies. Once a cohesive system is determined, the group will map a set of modular services and add in best practices for easier implementations.

In addition to Adobe, the core group of companies involved in the ebSOA effort include The Boeing Co., Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., Commerce One Inc. and Cyclone Commerce Inc.
