SAS Institute Inc. announced Wednesday a definitive agreement to acquire ABC Technologies Inc., a company it had worked with for the past 18 months to develop an XML-based standard for scorecarding applications.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed though it is subject to the approval of ABC Technologies shareholders and other conditions. The deal is expected to close later this month.

The acquisition of Beaverton, Ore.-based ABC Technologies will strengthen SAS position in performance management applications, SAS officials said.

ABC develops software for activity-based cost and profit management, balanced scorecarding, resource planning, value chain and supply chain management and business intelligence under the Oros brand. It uses the umbrella term Active Enterprise Management to describe all of its applications.

“Ive long been impressed by ABC Technologies and its dedication to solutions in the performance management space,” said SAS president and CEO Jim Goodnight, in a statement. “By integrating the ABC team into SAS, we will become bigger and better. Our combined solution will provide our customers with a breadth of applications that other vendors in the space cant match.”

ABC Technologies CEO Chris Pieper will join SAS, of Cary, N.C., as president of the companys Active Performance Management program once the deal closes. SAS also gets ABCs BetterManagement.com knowledge portal site as part of the deal. ABC is expected to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAS post-acquisition.

Pieper in a statement said he looked forward to being able to take advantage of SAS resources. “The integration of activity-based costing with performance management addresses customer pains across many industries,” he said. “Im confident SAS will move to the front of the pack in the performance management space and then lead it to new heights.”
