As high-bandwidth Internet connections proliferate, sites of all sizes are sharing cable-modem and DSL links. A simple option is to buy a low-end digital subscriber line/cable router from a vendor such as Linksys, Netgear or Umax. Where security is critical and budgets are larger, Internet appliances such as SonicWalls add firewall and virtual private network capabilities.

For small sites, Westell offers the WireSpeed DSL modem for $373. The preloaded WebShare software uses Network Address Translation with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Setup is as simple as connecting the modem to a DSL line and patching in a hub or a switch to an Ethernet port. The WireSpeed supports Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet for authentication with a broadband service provider.
