Its Super Tuesday and the results are in…the results of the Eclipse Foundations election, that is.
According to sources, the newly-independent Eclipse Foundation has elected members to some of its key positions who will help govern the organization as it moves into its new role as the steward of the open-source Java-based development platform.
According to a source close to the election, Todd Williams, vice president of technology at Dallas-based Genuitec LLC, and Rich Main, director of Java development environments for SAS Institute Inc., of Cary, N.C., have been elected to the Eclipse board of directors as the two add-in provider representatives.
More than 40 add-in providers selected these two to represent them on the board, sources said.
Said one individual close to the process who asked not to be identified: “Todd Williams has the appropriate technical background and has already proven to have a vision for Eclipse with the rich client platform. Rich Main has been very active on behalf of Eclipse since SAS became a member, and with his background at the JCP [Java Community Process] and JTC [Java Tools Community] he will certainly advocate an open attitude of Eclipse.”
Meanwhile, the two individuals voted to represent Eclipse “committers,” or folks who have the ability to partially control the content distributed in the Eclipse.org CVS (Concurrent Versions System) repository, are John Wiegand, Eclipse platform lead for IBM in Portland, Ore., and Bjorn Freeman-Benson, a research scientist at the University of Washingtons Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
However, the Eclipse Foundation has yet to elect a new executive director. As of early February when the Eclipse organization spun out from under IBMs control, there were five candidates for the position, sources said. However, there are now eight candidates sources said.
Skip McGaughey, who formerly held the position of chairman of the Eclipse board and is now a spokesman for the organization, told eWEEK in a past interview that one of the primary criteria for the new executive director position is that the person not be an IBM employee. Skip is an IBM employee.
Meanwhile, in addition to IBM Corp., corporate members of the new Eclipse Foundation board include Intel Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., SAP AG, Ericsson Inc., MontaVista Software Inc., QNX Software Systems Inc. and Serena Software Inc.
