eWEEK is building a new IT products and services section that encompasses most of the categories that we cover on our site. In it, we will spotlight the leaders in each sector, which include enterprise software, hardware, security, on-premises-based systems, and cloud services. We also will add promising new companies as they come into the market.

Company Name: Unravel Data (application performance management software)

Company Description: Unravel Data describes itself as the Application Performance Management (APM) platform for big data that is full-stack and intelligent.

Unravel Data guarantees the reliability and performance of apps, maximizes cost savings (across storage, compute and users), and improves productivity in a self-service DataOps environment. Unravel Data supports all big data applications such as ETL, analytics, machine learning, SQL and streaming, running on popular big data systems such as Hadoop and Spark for both on-premise and cloud environments.

Unravel Data claims to provide the only Application Performance Management (APM) solution for big data. Unravel doesn’t just monitor and unify system-level data, but it also tracks correlates and interprets performance data across the full-stack in-order to optimize, troubleshoot and analyze from a single pane. Unravel Data was founded in 2013 by CEO Kunal Agarwal and Dr. Shivnath Babu when they experienced the frustration of manually troubleshooting performance problems in Big Data stacks firsthand. Unravel serves organizations in verticals including finance, telecom, technology, healthcare, retail and more.

The company emerged from stealth in fall 2016.

Unravel’s founding team includes big data experts from companies such as Cloudera, Oracle and Microsoft. Unravel Data has raised a total of $23 million of funding from Menlo Ventures, GGV Capital, M12, Data Elite Ventures and Jyoti Bansal. The company is privately held and is headquartered in Menlo Park, Calif.

Markets: Unravel’s key markets are the Americas, EMEA and emerging in APAC.

International operations: Unravel has established an EMEA operation in London and will be working to build out its global presence over the coming months.

      Product and Services

Unravel’s APM for Big Data Platform: Unravel makes big data operations more proactive and productive by automating problem discovery, root-cause analysis, and resolution across the entire Big Data stack, while improving ROI and time to value of Big Data investments. Unravel’s APM for Big Data Platform addresses the skills gaps and technical challenges that Fortune 2000 organizations feel by simplifying and automating problem detection, diagnosis and resolution.

      Key Features

Optimize: Unravel maximizes the performance of applications and cluster resources by automatically detecting and diagnosing app dependencies. The APM for Big Data platform discovers why apps are not performing and recommends ways to optimize on-premise and cloud resources to improve reliability and predictability.

Troubleshoot: Unravel guides enterprises to the root cause of their application performance issues instantly. The APM for Big Data platform helps auto-tune big data projects to a desired goal (such as an SLA or resource efficiency) by leveraging artificial intelligence operations (AIOps) optimization techniques.

Analyze: Unravel connects organizations to their entire big data stack from applications to infrastructure—and helps detect and diagnose app contention, poor code, resource allocations and more.
