Vito Technology has released a free application for GPS-enabled Windows Mobile devices that helps users locate others with similarly equipped devices. Vito FindMe uses SMS (Short Message Service) to transmit the devices coordinates in response to properly authenticated queries, according to the company.
During installation, the user enters a 4-digit password that is subsequently used by trusted friends and associates to query the device via SMS for its location. According to Vito, the unit returns its geographic coordinates in a reply SMS. The returned coordinates can then be looked up on Google Maps. If the query message includes an e-mail address, the coordinates will also be e-mailed.
FindMe is compatible with Windows Mobile 2003 SE, 5.0, and 6.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition and requires a built-in GPS receiver. Vito says that support of external GPS receivers will be added in the next version.
