Campers and beach bums rejoice. New from Nokia is the 3720 classic, a rugged mobile phone the company is cheekily instructing users to “handle without care.”
The 3720 features a sealed, leak-proof design-the battery cover is said to be screwed on, to protect the battery and internal circuitry from dust, mud and water-and it has an Ingress Protection rating, the military’s standard of measurement, of IP-54. The 5 denotes a 5 out of 6 protection rating against “solid objects,” and the 4 is a 4 of 8 protection against liquids, meaning it can withstand sprays of water. (An 8 of 8 could be submerged for long periods.)
“Whether using it at the beach or in a dusty construction site, the Nokia 3720 classic has been specifically engineered to withstand the splashes, bumps and drops that come with the terrain,” said Markkuu Suomi, Nokia’s vice president of Connect devices, in a statement. “While the Nokia 3720 classic is tough on the outside, it is equally functional on the inside-a perfect choice for people who want a long-lasting and reliable mobile phone for any environment.”
The 3720 classic runs the Symbian Series 40 platform, weighs 3.3 ounces and measures 4.5 by 1.8 by 0.6 inches. Data services come via EDGE and GPRS, and the resolution of the TFT LCD display is 320 by 240 QVGA.
A 2-megapixel camera, with LED flash and zoom, is included, as well as a stereo music player, an XHTML browser, Bluetooth 2.1, Micro USB, 2.5mm AV and DC connectivity, and a built-in LED flashlight-which Nokia more excitingly refers to as a “torch function.”
Those campers and beach-goers might also make good use of Nokia Maps, which comes preloaded on the 1GB microSD card, which can support up to 8GB.
Talk time is up to 7 hours, according to Nokia, and standby time is up to 18 days.
The 3720 is expected to retail for roughly $175-before taxes or subsidies-and will begin shipping this summer.
