The use of personal smartphones for business is ubiquitous, and at this point there's no turning back. Given the obvious security risks, some businesses have instituted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy that allows employees to use the personal device they are familiar with for work and removes the business from the task of buying and updating a fleet of mobile devices.

For BYOD to be successful, however, it needs to be part of a holistic strategy for managing mobile devices that includes a formal mobile device policy, mobile device management software and a method of informing users about the security and policies they are expected to follow.

The following infographic explores the current mobile device situation across the globe, and shows that security is often lacking, secrecy about the use of mobile devices remains and that BYOD alone can't be expected to solve all of these problems, especially when you consider that more than one-quarter of IT professionals say they are not at all familiar with the concept.
