OQO Inc. will launch its OQO Model 01 palmtop computer in mid-October, a company representative said in an e-mail.

The OQO, first disclosed in 2002 and formally unveiled in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is one of a small number of palmtop computers designed to replace a PDA or handheld with a more functional, albeit smaller, computing device.

The OQO will be formally introduced at an event in San Francisco on Oct. 14, according to the e-mail.

The device will compete with such palmtops as Sony Corp.s U50/U70 and Antelope Technologies Inc.s Modular Computing Core, as well as Vulcan Inc.s FlipStart, which is not yet available.

Pricing for the OQO Model 01 has not been disclosed, but OQOs chief executive has previously said that the unit would cost less than $2,000.
