Palm and Sprint are preparing to host a launch party for the Palm Pre, which will benefit IAVA, a group dedicated to the troops and veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to their civilian supporters.
The launch party will take place on June 3 at 7 p.m. PT at Raleigh Studios Hollywood, in Hollywood, Calif., and have a farmers’ market theme-a large market of fresh, local produce will run down the center of the cocktail reception, and proceeds from the market will benefit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
Additionally, for every celebrity in attendance, Palm said it will donate a Pre to a veteran through IAVA.
Actor Jason Alexander, of “Seinfeld” fame, will be the evening’s emcee, and the event will include a “special guest performance by one of the world’s most famous and successful comedians of all time,” Palm announced in a statement. Word has since leaked that the comedian is Jerry Seinfeld.
The wildly hyped Pre will go on sale June 6 on the Sprint 3G network, and finally begin answering the question of whether or not it will be an Apple iPhone killer, as Palm and Sprint are hoping.
The Pre will sell for $199 after a rebate and two-year contract. Whether or not it wins over potential iPhone customers, the Pre will also compete with RIM BlackBerry devices in the enterprise and with Nokia’s N97 mobile computer.
