Sharp Corp. is readying the next generation of its Linux-based Zaurus handheld computer.
The Zaurus SL-6000 has a built-in 802.11b Wi-Fi radio, according to Sharp officials in Mahwah, N.J. It sports 64MB of RAM, a high-resolution color screen, a built-in QWERTY keyboard, and both Compact Flash and SD expansion slots. Sharp will be selling an add-on cellular modem for the Compact Flash slot so that Zaurus can work on wide-area networks, too.
Too woo corporate customers, Sharp has teamed up with IBM to develop a version of the SL-6000 that runs IBMs WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager software, which allows for wireless access to corporate applications.
The SL-6000 is due early next year.
