Sony has unveiled its latest fully featured consumer smartphones, the Xperia Z5 flagship phone and its smaller Xperia Z5 Compact version, which will be sold in the United States starting Feb. 7.
The larger flagship Xperia Z5 (pictured) includes a 5.2-inch FHD 1080p (1,920-by-1,080) Triluminos display, a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, an Adreno 430 graphics processor and 3GB of memory. The handset also includes up to 32GB of flash storage, a microSD card slot that can handle storage cards of up to 200GB and the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system.
The Xperia Z5 also features a 2,900mAh rechargeable battery that offers up to two days of battery life and is waterproof and dustproof to IP65 and IP68 durability standards, so a little rain won’t damage it. The Z5, which is 5.7 inches long, 2.83 inches wide and 0.28 inches thick, weighs 5.43 ounces. The handset comes in graphite black, white, gold and green colors.
The smaller Xperia Z5 Compact version comes with a slightly smaller 4.6-inch HD 720p (1,280-by-720) Triluminos display, but includes the same CPU and graphics processor, the same flash storage features and the same Android operating system as its larger stable mate. It includes a slightly less-powerful 2,700mAh rechargeable battery that offers up to two days of battery life, and it is also waterproof and dustproof to IP65 and IP68 durability standards.
The Z5 Compact, which is 5 inches long, 2.55 inches wide and 0.35 inches thick, weighs 4.9 ounces. The handset comes in graphite black, white, yellow and coral colors.
Both smartphones include 23-megapixel main rear-facing Sony cameras that include hybrid autofocus wide-angle G lenses, 5x clear image zoom capabilities, up to 8x digital zoom, and ISO capabilities up to 12,800 for photos and 3,200 for videos. Both devices also feature Sony’s SteadyShot technology for sharper images, video stabilization, 4K video recording and pulse LED flash.
In addition, both models feature a 5MP front camera that captures Full HD video and includes SteadyShot and video stabilization.
The Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Compact also both work on GSM, UMTS HSPA 3G and LTE 4G networks and feature Bluetooth 4.1 and WiFi MIMO connectivity.
Included in both handsets is Sony’s PS4 Remote Play, which lets users continue to play their Sony PlayStation games on their phones over WiFi wherever they are located.
The Xperia Z5 models also feature built-in Sony phone migration apps to help users move their data, personal information and personal content to their new handset from their old phones, whether they are Android or iOS models. Also included is Xperia Lounge Gold, which gives Sony customers exclusive access to a wide range of content, apps, and themes.
Both models will be unlocked versions that will be sold through Amazon, Best Buy and B&H starting Feb. 7, at $599 for the Z5 and $499 for the Z5 Compact version, according to a report by AndroidPolice.
Both Sony phones will have quite a bit of tough competition, with the handsets competing with Apple iPhone 7s models, Samsung’s Galaxy S6 flagship phones, and other handsets from Moto, LG, Huawei and others.
