Convera Technologies Inc. plans to add language modules to its search technologies thanks to technology acquired as part of its purchase of Semantix Inc. late Thursday.

With Semantix linguistics technology added to Convera RetrievalWare, users will be able to enter a search request in one language and receive relevant result documents in different languages. The new technology is expected to be available in RetrievalWare 7.0 due out later this month.

The combined technology is expected to appeal to certain verticals, like government intelligence, according to officials at Convera in Vienna, Va.

Semantix CTO and founder Francis Malka joins Convera as vice president of advanced technologies and is expected to spearhead the companys efforts to provide multi-language search capabilities.

Multi-lingual capabilities were also central to another acquisition announced today in the telephony industry, as Globetech Ventures Inc. announced its intention to purchase communications ASP Net 7 Software Inc.

Globetech, the Vancouver, B.C.-based chief funder of Internet-based translation service provider TranslationWave.com, plans to use Net 7s technology to offer translation services across multiple messaging channels, including the Internet, the public-switched telephone network and wireless networks, company officials said.

The combined company plans to offer such services as accessing e-mail messages through a telephone, in a different language from the original message, or translating documents and delivering them to fax machines, Globetech officials said.

“These and other service possibilities bring an exciting new set of features to the enhanced communications marketplace and will be a valuable source for businesses and individuals worldwide,” said Dil Gujral, president, Globetech Ventures Inc., in a statement.

Omey Nandyal, CEO of Chicago-based Net 7, said the acquisition would provide “great opportunity” for Net 7 customers.

“Our business customers with multi-national reach have long been searching for fast and efficient translation services,” he said. “TranslationWave provides the tools we have needed to address these customers¡¯ requirements.”

Terms of the acquisitions were not disclosed
