For most users, the application-sharing features of Web-conferencing services provide performance thats good enough to handle typical business documents.

However, when working with applications that manage more complex and robust data—namely, three-dimensional CAD applications—most Web-conferencing solutions will leave attendees and presenters out of sync.

CoCreate Software Inc.s OneSpace.net 2005 provides a different experience because of compression technology developed in conjunction with the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics, the organization that developed MPEG encoding.

Introduced as part of a service pack for the OneSpace.net service last month, the compression technology let us keep both ends of a desktop application-sharing session in sync in eWEEK Labs tests.

Although it was difficult to provide a quantifiable measure of a performance difference in side-by-side comparisons with WebEx Communications Inc.s WebEx Meeting and Microsoft Corp.s Live Meeting 2005, we saw that OneSpace.net offered a considerably smoother rotation of a 3-D object than Live Meeting or WebEx.

The OneSpace technology is system-dependent, however, so the faster the system and the better the graphics card, the better the performance we saw.
