PreCache Unveils NetInjector Platform

Platform to help companies offer computing capabilities to tech gadgets ranging from cell phones to MP3 players.

PreCache Inc. announced Friday a NetInjector software platform that fits into the network middleware category and is geared toward helping companies offer computing capabilities to a variety of techno gadgets—from cell phones and hand-helds to personal video recorders and MP3 players, officials said.

Using a publish/subscribe messaging model, the NetInjector platform enables infrastructure providers and device manufacturers to deliver computing and Web services applications on the Internet.

Publish/subscribe enables the continuous flow of information that can be changed at one source and immediately updated throughout a network.

The platform essentially provides a platform for delivering data messaging, storage and application interoperability to a variety of computer devices, according to PreCache officials in Bridgewater, N.J.

The NetInjector platform—and PreCache—received funding from Sony Music Entertainment, which pumped about $10 million into the development of the platform.

Sony officials said in a press release that PreCaches NetInjector is a crucial infrastructure technology that could enable the delivery of end user subscribed content at a declining rate of per-user infrastructure cost.

With NetInjector, PreCache officials claim that millions of heterogeneous devices across wired and wireless networks can be connected in a near real-time, interactive information flow.

The NetInjector platforms core technology is actually the integration of three technologies: Intelligent message routing, distributed channels, and event agents and adaptors.

With the Event Routing Core, a set of optimized content-based routing algorithms are coupled with software-based caching to enable ActiveData—an interrupt-driven, selective messaging architecture that can be deployed on application servers or within network devices.

The Event Agent is the equivalent of an applications IP stack and provides the API needed to connect application software to event routing cores, officials said. The agent is deployed on end devices, including servers, desktops, laptops, cell phones and set-top boxes connected to NetInjector-enabled networks.

A Channel Services component is PreCaches equivalent of a domain naming service for publish/subscribe communications, and is deployed on servers or appliances and provides mapping capabilities.

The NetInjector platform will be available this quarter.
