Palm Losing Grip?

Compaq Computer is expected to become the top seller of handheld computers in terms of revenue — surpassing category pioneer Palm, according to a report issued last week by Gartner Dataquest. Although Palm will still lead in terms of units shipped for the second quarter of 2001, the report said, Compaqs iPaq handhelds, which run Microsofts Pocket PC software, have a higher average selling price.

Oracle Profits Droop

Oracle last week reported that profits for its most recent quarter were 83 percent lower than for the same period last year. It had $855 million in net income and revenue of $3.3 billion for the quarter ended May 31. For its fiscal year that just ended, Oracle reported revenue of $11 billion and net income of $2.6 billion.

Grid Is Good

Terraspring, a “grid computing” software company, has raised $28 million in funding from Accel Partners, EMC, Hewlett-Packard and Mohr, Davidow Ventures. The Fremont, Calif., start-up is developing technology that can tap underutilized computing and storage resources in a data center. The software is schedule to be available by the years end.
