Palm has introduced the m125, a new low-end handheld priced at $250; aimed at first-time buyers it includes an expansion card slot. Handspring, meanwhile, has rolled out two new Visor handhelds: Visor Pro, a rechargeable unit with 16 megabytes of memory priced at $300, and Visor Neo, an entry-level model priced at $200.

AltaVista has hired James Barnett, formerly president of MyFamily.com, as its new CEO. Barnett replaces Rod Schrock, who left AltaVista in October 2000. The company also says it will lay off 160 employees, or 32 percent of its work force, in an effort to become profitable. AltaVista is majority-owned by CMGI, an Internet incubator company based in Andover, Mass.
CEOs Cash In
The salaries of CEOs at private, venture-backed companies rose to a median of $216,000 for the first half of 2001, an increase of $11,000 from the second half of 2000, according to a survey by research firm VentureOne. Sixty-five percent of the companies surveyed were Internet-related.
