IBM and Cisco Systems Inc. teamed up Thursday to give streaming media a shot in the arm by helping enterprises more easily distribute digital video throughout their networks.
Digital video requires high bandwidth, and many streaming applications, such as sales and marketing tools, corporate communications and online training, require reliable security as well. With content delivery infrastructure provided by Cisco, enterprises can get the benefit of a high-performance streaming media network without implementing expensive facilities, according to IBM.
The Digital Media Delivery Solution is an open platform that builds on any existing platform, such as Real Networks, that an enterprise may be using. The companies tout the system as a way to reduce the management and production cost for online training and conferencing.
“This is going to make rich media more accessible to a large number of users around world,” said Mike Maas, vice president of marketing for IBM communications sector in White Plains, N.Y.
Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has deployed the system to deliver educational material to students off campus, Maas said.
Service providers can also purchase the system to offer managed streaming media service to enterprises.
