Microsoft Offers XP SP2 Download for IT Managers

Redmond gives IT pros and developers the green light to download the 272MB package-but single users are still waiting.

Microsoft on Monday offered its Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) for download by IT professionals and developers.

The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers weighs in at about 272MB. Microsoft Corp. said the package is "intended for IT professionals and developers downloading and installing on multiple computers on a network."

But the smaller SP2 download for individual users is still not available through Windows Update. The company said the update will be ready "soon" for customers updating just one computer. It is directing individuals to its Protect Your PC page.

The interest in this service pack has been keen, since it features a significant overhaul of the security code found in the Windows client. The update had been expected early in the spring, but concerns about quality and compatibility delayed its release.

Microsoft warned developers and customers that XP2 might be incompatible with a number of third-party applications. More recently, Microsoft added admonitions about its own Microsoft Business Solutions CRM versions 1.0 and 1.2 and offered a patch for the applications.
