Microsoft has issued what it’s calling “The Open Specification Promise” in order to insure customers and developers interested in implementing 35 Web services specs (in which Microsoft has played a role in creating) that they won’t be sued for doing so. On the list is everything from SOAP, to WS-Federation, to WS-Trust. (The move sounds somewhat akin to the January 2005 promise by IBM not to take legal action against open-source companies over 500 of its patents.) Microsoft Director of Corporate Standards Jason Matusow blogs about Microsoft’s thinking that led to the creationof the promise. From early feedback, it sounds like a number of Microsoft watchers, competitors and partners are bullish on Microsoft’s latest standards efforts.
