MicroStrategy Inc. withstood falling revenues to post a modest profit for its third quarter, ended Sept. 30, marking the third straight profitable quarter for a company once plagued by financial restatements.

The McLean, Va.-based business intelligence software vendor saw revenues fall to $33.4 million from $41.4 million in the third quarter last year. License revenues fell from $15.2 million to $12.9 million year-to-year.

MicroStrategy did manage a $1.5 million profit, though, compared to a $9.1 million loss in last years third quarter.

In other earnings reported by business intelligence vendors this week:

Business Objects saw revenues rise from $99.2 million to $110 million, but its net income was nearly cut in half, from $9.3 million to $4.9 million.

Brio Software Inc. cut its losses from $9.2 million to $2.7 million, while revenues fell from $28.2 million to $24.8 million.

Sagent Technology Inc. cut losses from $12.8 million to $9.1 million, but revenues also fell, from $11.4 million to $8.8 million.

Actuate Corp. managed a $1.6 million profit, up from $730,000 in last years third quarter. Revenues fell, however, from $28.2 million to $25.6 million.

Comshare Inc. saw revenues fall only slightly, from $15 million to $14.2 million, while it turned an $819,000 profit compared to an $8.7 million loss in the same period a year ago.

Hyperion Solutions Corp. saw revenues go up from $117.3 million to $119.8 million, led by a resurgence in license revenues, from $38.8 million to $46.6 million. The company managed a $9.1 million profit, compared to a $1.9 million profit in the same period a year ago.
