Lucent Technologies has deployed a new Web-based procurement solution, as part of the companys struggle to regain profitability.

Alliente, KPMG Consulting and Ariba worked behind the scenes to pull together the new system, known as EZBuy, for Lucent.

EZBuy provides customized procurement services for goods and services—including computer equipment and maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) for Lucent employees around the world.

The solution includes Allientes sourcing programs and application hosting templates, Aribas supply chain software platform, as well as implementation and change-management services from KPMG Consultings implementation and change management expertise.

Catalogs from roughly 200 strategic suppliers are now online, within the new Lucent system.

Its unclear how much money the new system will save Lucent, but the networking company can use all the spare change it can find. For its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, Lucent lost $14.20 billion from continuing operations. The company has dismissed 29,000 employees, bringing total headcount to about 77,000 people.

Nevertheless, Lucent says it will return to profitability next year.
