What's Up with Search

There's plenty going on with search engine innovation, from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others, but is it really an improvement, or annoying mind reading? Stan Gibson presents some answers. Underneath Google's calm exterior are underlining changes in its search technology, including "universal search," which serves multiple types of content instead of just text. Is this an improvement? Some analysts say that there may be too much complexity. Another new technology is social search, which offers searches that are based on the searches of other Web users that have similar interests, but this method may filter out information users may want. Vertical search focuses just on one particular area, such as video, or gadgets, or manufacturing.
