    Acer Juices Up SMB Desktops

Acer America Corp. is upgrading its line of desktops aimed at small and midsized businesses.

The San Jose, Calif., company on Thursday unveiled the Veriton GT family of computers that come with hardware and software improvements over the current Veriton desktops.

The systems include the latest Intel Corp. processors and chip sets, including the 865G chip set. That chip set supports the chip makers HyperThreading technology for multithreaded applications.

The new desktops—the Veriton 7600GT, 5600GT and 3600GT—also support Intels new Prescott Pentium 4 chips, which will start at speeds of 3.4GHz and will increase to 4GHz by the end of the year. Those chips will be phased into the Veriton GTs in May or June, according to Justin Shong, national sales manager and product marketing manager for desktops in North America.

The systems also offer Intels Celeron chips starting at 2.6GHz.

Acer also has increased the power supply from 200 to 250 watts, which will lead to larger video and wireless cards, Shong said.

The desktops also come with support for up to eight Universal Serial Bus 2.0 ports and up to five PCI slots.

On the software side, Acer is introducing in the systems a new version of its One Touch Recovery button, which enables fast restoration in case of a shutdown. The first version only allowed users to restore the system to the image shipped preloaded from the factory, Shong said. The new version will enable users to establish their own, defined settings rather than relying on the preloaded image.

The systems also come with Acers security software that prevents data from being downloaded to an external device or uploaded from outside sources without user verification.

The Veriton GT systems run Microsoft Corp.s Windows XP operating system and start at $813.
