On Aug. 11, Apple began offering its 15-inch MacBook Pro with the option of an anti-glare widescreen display-for an extra $50-in addition to a glossy display, Apple Insider first reported.
In this it joins the 17-inch MacBook Pro, though the 13-incher still only comes in glossy for now.
Approximately two years ago, Apple transitioned its Mac products from matte screens to edge-to-edge glossy glass screens framed in black, likely following the popularity of these screens on the iPhone, Apple Insider reports.
While most users agreed the glossy displays look great, some find the glare coming off them to be less appealing than the old matte finishes, some say they’re more straining on the eyes than matte screens, and some creative professionals assert that the matte screens offer more accurate color representation.
No longer playing favorites, Apple now allows online purchasers to choose for themselves at checkout.
The 15-inch MacBook Pro comes in three versions: a 2.53GHz model with a 250GB hard drive and Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics; a 2.66GHz model with a 320GB hard drive and Nvidia’s GeForce 9400M plus 9600M GT with 256MB; and a 2.8GHz model with a 500GB hard drive and the Nvidia GeForce 9400M plus 9600M GT with 512MB.
Pricing begins at $1,699. The 2.66GHz model starts at $1,999 and the 2.8GHz at $2,299.
At Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, where the company introduced the iPhone 3GS, it also announced updates to the MacBook Pro line that included drops in prices and boosts to battery life.
