The Studio 14z is the newest addition to Dell’s laptop lineup. Scheduled to arrive in July, it’s geared toward students, and perhaps anyone else interested in showcasing their “creativity and self expression” on the exterior of their laptop.
The Studio 14z comes in six colors – Black Chain Link, Royal Blue, Promise Pink, Spring Green, Plum Purple and Ruby Red – but the big-time personalizing comes in the additional offer of original artwork from artists and designs from the Dell Design Studio, totaling more than 120 options.
Under all that fanciness is a 4.5-pound laptop, measuring 1.2 inches deep, that addresses computing, connectivity and entertainment needs.
The 14z features Intel Pentium Dual Core processors, up to 5 GB of 1,066MHz DDR3 Dual-Channel SDRAM memory and SATA hard drive storage options with a capacity of up to 500 GB, speeds up to 7,200 rpm and a free-fall sensor to reduce damage in the event of a tumble.
There’s integrated 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet LAN, support for wireless LAN with Dell Wireless 1515 802.11a/g/n and a Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini Card, plus support for mobile broadband and optional Bluetooth.
      On the entertainment side, there’s a Nvidia 9400M graphics card, and the 14-inch 16:9 high-definition (720 pixel) 1366×768 WLED display can be upgraded to a 16:9 HD+ (900 pixel) 1600×900 WLED display.
Users can also choose between DVD+/-RW or Blue-ray Disc optical drives, and two headphone jacks, a 34mm Express Card slot, an 8-in-1 Flash memory reader and a USB with Powershare – to generously power-up other USB devices from the Studio 14z, even when it’s off- are a few of its other features.
Oh, and a 1.3-megapixel Webcam with facial recognition technology and microphone, for maybe staying in touch with the folks back home. Or collaborating on projects.
Battery life is said to be 6-plus hours with an optional 8-cell 85WHr lithium-ion battery, though a 6-cell, 56WHr battery comes standard.
Starting price for the Studio 14z will be $649.
