Technology giant Dell unveiled its XPS 14z notebook, an ultra-thin 14-inch computer running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium that measures in at less than an inch thin. The design also maximizes screen size, delivering a 14-inch screen in a 13-inch form factor, and features an anodized aluminum finish with a magnesium alloy palm rest, internal optical drive and discrete graphics option.
In addition, the XPS 14z, announced Oct. 24, is available with second-generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors, an HD WLED display a slot-load optical drive and an Nvidia graphics option.
Starting at just 4.36 pounds and offering up to 6 hours and 42 minutes of battery life (the tested system was equipped with an eight-cell battery, 8GB of memory, nVidia GeForce GT 520M graphics, Intel Core i7-2640M and a 750GB/7,200-rpm hard drive), the notebook also comes with the Dell Stage user interface, which offers one-click access to content, including music, photos and video. SyncUP powered by Nero can keep content and personal information synced with other Stage-enabled Dell PCs and mobile devices within a home WiFi network.

For us, it’s about delivering the right feature-set and design to provide the best user experience for our customers,” Sam Burd, vice president of Dell’s consumer and small/medium business product group, said in a statement. “With the XPS 14z, our challenge was to build a laptop that provided customers the performance and portability that they need, with the design and finish they desire.”
Other features include 6GB dual-channel DDR3 with up to 8GB DDR3 1,333MHz memory; a backlit, spill-resistant Chiclet keyboard; built-in Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 802.11 A/G/N and Bluetooth 3.0 wireless connectivity; USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and Mini Display-Port and microphone/audio connectors; and a built-in 1.3-megapixel HD Webcam with dual-array digital microphones and stereo speakers. The notebook also has the option of being Intel Wireless Display ready, which requires an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 or Centrino Advanced N 6200 wireless card, a Netgear PTV1000 Push2TV media adapter (sold separately), and an HDMI or composite AV-enabled display.
The XPS 14z laptop will be available Nov. 1 in the United States and Canada, priced from $999 through the company’s Website and in retail stores nationwide. The notebook will be available in other regions worldwide starting Nov. 15, according to a company statement. In addition, consumers can test the XPS 14z at 38 Dell@ locations across the United States. Dell@ locations will allow customers to experience a range of Dell products in one place, have testing time and experience how they work together for the digital home.
