Hewlett-Packard Inc. is getting more specific with its business PCs. The venerable company on March 5 introduced a professional-class notebook, an all-in-one laptop and a display monitor—all tailor-made for the health care industry—at the HIMSS18 health-care technology conference in Las Vegas.
HP, you may recall, has specialized some of its notebooks in the past, although it was not for a specific professional market. Three years ago, the venerable IT provider joined with LucasFilms Ltd. to create a whimsical special edition “Star Wars” notebook that coincided with the 2015 release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
This time there’s no movie involved. These machines are constructed to address the unique needs of health care providers. These attributes include tougher-to-crack security for patient safety, smarter workflows, telemedicine solutions—and even provisions to keep them cleaner and germ-free.
New Notebook, All-in-One and Monitor
The new devices include the HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition notebook, the HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition All-in-One (AiO), and the HP Healthcare Edition HC270cr Clinical Review Display.
Quick facts on the new HP Healthcare Edition portfolio, according to HP, include:
- an ultra-slim notebook, All-in-One, and premium clinical review display purpose-built for health care;
- software that enhances the connection between care providers and patients while optimizing clinical workflows;
- notebooks that allow for easy sanitization with germicidal wipes every shift, every day;
- integrated RFID (radio frequency identification) readers for single sign-on authentication and Vidyo Ready for smarter workflows and world-class telemedicine experience; and
- notebooks that provide maximum device and data protection to comply more easily with HIPAA requirements.
Keeping Germs Out of the Picture
Industry research claims that there are about 1.7 million health care-associated infections (HAIs) in U.S. hospitals each year, illustrating the need for devices designed for repeated and thorough sanitization. At the same time, there is a need to streamline clinical workflows and boost productivity to improve the care delivery experience.
On average, HP said, clinicians log into workstations and applications 70 times a day, impacting the amount of time spent engaging with patients. Lastly, security threats are complex and require comprehensive defense strategies. In 2016, more than 16 million health care records were exposed or stolen, with the average cost of a data breach per lost or stolen record estimated to be $355 in the U.S.

HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition Notebook, the first notebook purpose-built for health care, includes HP Easy Clean software to facilitate cleaning with germicidal wipes while the device is still on. HP claims it is the first ultra-slim notebook for healthcare to integrate RFID and biometrics for single sign-on authentication. It features HP Sure View Gen4 to deter visual hacking and is optimized for an intuitive collaboration experience: HP Audio Boost, HP Noise Cancellation, and IR/RGB camera for optimized audio and video calls.

HP EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition AiO (all-in-one) is the world’s first AiO with integrated dual-band RFID and biometrics for single sign-on authentication. It features HP Manageability Integration Kit (MIK) and provides collaboration with HP Audio Boost, HP Noise Cancellation to suppress background distractions from noisy environments, and a dual-facing pop-camera to simplify patient registration and badging while offering an enhanced privacy option when the camera is not in use.
- HP Healthcare Edition HC270cr Clinical Review Display is the first clinical review display to include an RFID reader that supports single-sign-on authentication. This is a 27-inch diagonal, 3.7-megapixel clinical review display with luminance uniformity, automatic backlight monitoring, auto image rotation and user-controlled calibration to accurately view medical images. It is the world’s first clinical review display with USB-C that supplies up to 65w power delivery for connected devices.
The HP Healthcare Edition products are designed for repeatable sanitization and tested to meet stringent industry standards, so the devices are safer to use in patient rooms. The health-care portfolio includes a collaborative telemedicine experience with Vidyo Ready and Skype for Business capabilities for superior video-visits and conferencing.
Availability
HP EliteBook 840 G5 Healthcare Edition Notebook is expected to be available in May. The EliteOne 800 G4 23.8 Healthcare Edition All-in-One and the Clinical Review Display are expected to be available in June.
