Ghost 7.0 nearly succeeds at being all things to all people and is still a good choice for setting up PCs in a central depot.
In testing the latest version of Symantecs software (www.symantec.com), I was able to clone a range of Windows 9x, NT and 2000 systems. Besides disk cloning, which is the products raison dêtre, Ghost has improved user migration and incremental backup tools.
Although the cloning operations usually went off without a hitch, Ghost still cant clone Windows 2000 systems that are configured with a dynamic disk. And the user migration tool doesnt stack up to single-purpose desktop migration products such as Altiris PC Transplant Pro.
IT managers should expect to see big improvements in disk cloning and desktop migration tools in the near future as several vendors ready new versions. Look for competitors, including Altiris and Miramar Systems, the maker of Desktop DNA, to be nipping at Symantecs heels.
