    Lexmark Targets Lawyers

Continuing its drive to deliver targeted solutions in select verticals through the channel, Lexmark International this week is rolling out a multifunction printer customized for law offices.

Available only through reseller partners, the Lexmark Legal Partner is an X646dte monochrome laser MFP (multifunction printer) with specialized workflow, file management and print tracking features.

“This solution really serves any size law firm, from a single attorneys office right up to a Top 50 firm,” said Lyle McMillin, industry consultant for legal services at Lexmark in Lexington, Ky. “Weve had folks focused on the legal services industry for several years, and weve come to understand the needs there. A law firms product is paper, and effective management of that product is vital.”

Lexmarks research, according to McMillin, found that 71 percent of users in legal services deemed file management “very important.” Law offices also place a premium on printing, copying and faxing, he said.

In response, the vendor fitted the new Lexmark Legal Partner X646dte with features such as a Scan to Court application, allowing administrators to set file size limits in order to meet court restrictions on electronic documents. Large scan jobs can be broken up into smaller file segments automatically in order to ensure compliance.

The Lexmark Legal Partners Scan to Network functionality lets lawyers to scan documents directly into their personal folders on the network based on user ID in order to maintain confidentiality and save time.

In addition to managing files, legal professionals polled by Lexmark said they need better ways to track, print and copy jobs so they can be charged to the client. To that end, Lexmark made its Legal Partner MFP compatible with the popular Copitrak client billing system. The entire print system can be controlled through intuitive icons on the units color eTask touch-screen interface. For devices placed in areas visible to clients, the touch-screen can be customized to feature the law firms logo as its background or screen saver.

The release of the Legal Partner MFP follows similar vertically targeted offerings unveiled earlier this year including the Lexmark Clinical Assistant for health care professionals and the Lexmark Education Station. A Lexmark official hinted that a fourth vertical product would debut later this year, but declined to say what industry it would focus on.

“These products specifically are designed to offer solution providers ways to move, deeper and faster, into lucrative, evolving vertical markets,” said Karen Randles, Lexmarks industry marketing manager for finance and services.

Available now, the Lexmark Legal Partner is expected to retail for $3,699.
