Google plans to describe a new Google service for the open-source community at the Open Source Convention on Thursday.
Stein’s involvement in several open-source projects outside of Google, including the Subversion version control system, leads some to speculate that Google may be planning some kind of competitor to code repository SourceForge or, at least, an open-source code vertical search engine.
Open-source rumors have surrounded Google before. In February Google was rumored to be developing a Linux-based operating system for the desktop. That rumor was denied by Ubuntu founder (and first space tourist!) Mark Shuttleworth.
