Members of the media received a special treat from Samsung Mobile tonight: an invite to join the consumer electronics company and Google for a special night, dubbed “Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 Google Episode.”
Here’s most of the invite to the event, which is dated Oct. 11 and takes place in San Diego, the same day and city CTIA Wireless is happening this fall:
If you’ve been following Ice Cream Sandwich developments at all, you can’t help but get the feeling this is the unveiling of the rumored Samsung Droid Prime.
Otherwise known as the Nexus Prime (it’s not clear whether Verizon will apply its signature Droid brand), this is to be the first smartphone based on Android 4.0, aka, ICS, that Verizon Wireless is expected to sell this holiday season in lieu of the Samsung Galaxy S II.
Verizon would seem to be making an interesting gamble. The S II sold over 10 million units overseas alone, and there’s no reason now to believe the momentum won’t continue for those devices offered from Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile, all of which are top of the line.
Contrast that with the previous Nexus devices, which Google positioned as flagship smartphones for new OS iterations. The Nexus One on T-Mobile, Nexus S from T-Mobile, and the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and AT&T haven’t exactly stormed the sales charts.
At any rate, Engadget scored some nifty video of ICS to give users a taste of what to expect when it is unveiled next month, likely at CTIA, with a phone shipping by November for the holiday season:
As Engadget noted, the Nexus S you see in the picture shows Honeycomb-like multitasking and notifications, as well as application trays for easy access.
We all knew this incorporation of holographics Honeycomb tablet functionality was coming though.
More interesting to me is this guy who whipped up the video. Apparently, he bought a Nexus S from someone on eBay and discovered it had ICS. Amazing. Some Googler clearly sold his or her test model.
Apple finds its new iPhones leaked in bars, while Google sees ICS leaked on eBay. Strange world.
