Ask.com thought Friday it was pulling an April Fool’s prank a little early with a fake press release about a hip hop search engine. It seems the joke was actually on them.

On March 31, Ask.com issued a statement, embargoed until April 1, about a rhyming dictionary soon to appear on the Ask.com site.

It’s “phat,” it’s “phresh”, and it’s going to fill the large need of the rap and hip hop communities for help with their rhyming. The statement goes on to quote an Ask engineer saying “Aspiring rappers and poets are a huge, untapped market.”

An Ask spokeswoman ‘fessed up immediately. Ha Ha! Just having some fun a few days early, she said.

Turns out, there are lots of online rhyming dictionaries. Check out here, here, here and a dozen other places.

So doesn’t that make the laugh on Ask? After all, in the end, the prank ended up exposing the fact Ask’s missing a feature a lot of its competitors already seem to have.

Ha Ha!
