The Federal Bureau of Investigations electronic surveillance experts worry that VoIP will become the communications mode of choice for criminals and terrorists unless the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) steps in. The public relations problem for VoIP providers is to not appear unpatriotic or unwilling to comply with the spirit of the law while at the same time trying to block costly, regulatory intrusions into the nascent industry. The FCC is expected to issue its first proposed rules this week to determine what, if any, telecom rules should apply to VoIP.
