Google is adding new capabilities to its Chrome Web browser to protect users from downloading applications that appear to be safe and valid, but are actually malicious programs in disguise.
These changes are designed to help users more easily identify deceptive software programs that can make unexpected changes to a user’s computer such as switching his or her home page or other browser settings without consent.
On the Google Chrome Blog, a Google security staff engineer explained that a warning will be shown in Chrome whenever there is an attempt to trick people into downloading and installing such software.
An NPD DisplaySearch report showed that tablet PC display shipments declined 10 percent between the first half of 2013 and 2014. Also, combined tablet PC display shipments to Apple and Samsung fell 34 percent.
This indicates that as the tablet PC market matures and growth slows, the dominance of market leaders Apple and Samsung is also weakening. The two companies accounted for 42 percent of tablet PC panel shipments in the first half of 2013, but their combined share dropped to 29 percent in the same period in 2014.
During SIGGRAPH 2014, Microsoft Research officials and the Italian Institute of Technology showed off an inexpensive way to turn a single consumer-grade camera into an instrument that can capture 3D data.
The group demonstrated how a modified smartphone camera can be used to track the skeletal movement of a hand in real time. Also, the researchers used a modified version of an off-the-shelf webcam to track faces and generate 3D reconstructions.
