When Dell acquired SonicWALL back in 2012, it acquired a portfolio that included security hardware for both large enterprises and small businesses. Among the hardware assets is the SonicWall TZ series firewalls, which are now being updated with new hardware and software features.
In a video with eWEEK, Dmitriy Ayrapetov, director of product management at Dell SonicWALL, detailed what’s new in the TZ firewall series. The TZ series has multiple models, including the entry-level SOHO edition that provides up to 300M bps of firewall inspection throughput. The TZ300 scales up to 750M bps of firewall inspection throughput with the TZ400 providing 1.3G bps of firewall inspection. At the top end of the new TZ portfolio is the TZ500, which delivers up to 1.4G bps of firewall throughput, and the TZ600, which scales to 1.5G bps.
The new TZ hardware is the sixth-generation refresh and is the first TZ series to carry the Dell brand. The previous generation of hardware was all silver, while the new hardware is black.
“We did a lot more than just paint the boxes black,” Ayrapetov said.
Ayrapetov added that the new generation of TZ products is four to five times faster than the previous generation.
While small business is a key target for the TZ, Ayrapetov said it is also a useful platform for large distributed enterprises. Even in a large company that has hundreds of offices around the world, large firewalls are in the data center and midsize firewalls are in the campus networks.
“What do you do if you have an office of 10 or 20 people or an executive working from home? You want to make sure that your perimeter security is the same, wherever that perimeter is,” Ayrapetov said.
