SAN FRANCISCO—Chris Young, senior vice president and general manager of Intel Security, delivered a keynote at the RSA Conference here today, the sixth year in a row he has done so. The keynote touched on multiple security topics, including the need for threat sharing and visibility.
In video interview with eWEEK, Young detailed some of the specific issues facing security and his company in particular, as it sets a path this year to become a stand-alone company. McAfee was acquired by Intel in August 2010 for $7.7 billion, forming the basis of what is now Intel Security. In September 2016, Intel announced a $4.2 billion deal to spin out the security business to once again operate under the McAfee name.
“We’re going live in Q2, and we will be McAfee again,” Young said. “We’ll be 100 percent dedicated to cyber-security.”
Young sees a growing attack surface, with connected devices and a real need for an increased emphasis on security throughout all aspects of technology. While some of McAfee’s rivals tend to refer to the company as a “legacy antivirus” vendor, that’s not the case, as the company has robust Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and advanced analytics capabilities.
“In our products today we have machine learning capabilities, we do dynamic application analysis and we have the ability to do sandboxing on the device itself,” Young said. “We have integrated EDR, and we have still got traditional antivirus.”
