SAN FRANCISCO–Pwnie Express is a company that is well-known in the security researcher community for its hardware-based penetration testing tools. Now, the company is positioning itself to go into the broader enterprise market as a product and services vendor that can help organizations find rogue devices and reduce the risk for attacks.
In an interview with eWEEK at the RSA Conference here, Pwnie Express CEO Paul Paget detailed what his company is doing now and what the direction is for the future.
“We just launched a system called Pwn Pulse which provides the ability to detect rogue activity and devices across the full wired and wireless spectrum,” Paget said. “We try to provide the detection capability that doesn’t exist in companies right now.”
At RSA, Pwnie Express debuted a new capability for its Pwn Pro device that detects rogue cellular base stations as well. Paget showed how the Pwn Pro device looks just like a typical wireless access point, but in fact it has a full server, including a complete suite of penetration tools.
“It gives companies a forward position in security, rather than just sitting back and waiting for something to happen,” he said.
Hstorically, the Pwnie Express products were targeted for use by penetration testing professionals, according to Paget. Now, however, Pwnie Express is aiming to attract security management executives, including chief information security officers (CISOs), to help them reduce enterprise security risks.
“We’re identifying everything that is communicating that is sending a signal,” he said. “So if you don’t allow 4G/LTE dongles, we’ll detect that and alert you to the fact that a 4G dongle has been plugged in.”
