Sonus Networks announced Jan. 31 that it has released its updated Network Border Switch platform, a security offering designed to help network operators protect the privacy of their IP networks and to protect those networks from attacks.

The updated NBS features enhanced DoS (denial of service) protection, allows network operators to securely exchange traffic between IP-based networks, and features monitoring and analytical tools that enable network operators to protect their networks, the company said.

NBS is available for Sonus Networks GSX9000 and GSX4000 Open Services Switch, the companys VOIP (voice over IP) processing platform that provides users with media gateway capabilities, allowing IP-based networks to interconnect to traditional circuit-based networks in the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

“NBS is a purpose-built IP-based solution that combines session control, PSTN gateway services and security into a single, high-performance, carrier-class system,” said Anand Parikh, vice president of product management for Sonus Networks, based in Westford, Mass.

NBS also allows network operators to control the systems media-handling capabilities and features IP signaling options that include SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), SIP-T, and H.323.

The updated NBS also includes network address and port translation features that protect the privacy of an IP network as well as session-based firewall capabilities and traffic control functionality.

“As IP networks become more pervasive—either through organic growth, new network operators deploying IP-based architectures or by the merging of existing networks—the need for a security approach beyond SBCs [Session Border Controllers] becomes increasingly important,” Parikh said.

The NBS is currently available in both GSX9000 and GSX4000 platforms and is deployed worldwide in North America, Europe and Asia. Cost is subject to specific carrier deployments.
