IBM will pay chip foundry Globalfoundries $1.5 billion to take IBM’s semiconductor business off its hands. This deal comes less than a month after IBM closed the $2.1 billion deal that sent its low-end x86 server business to Lenovo. Speculation about IBM’s interest in selling its semiconductor business began earlier this year, soon after the deal with Lenovo was announced. Globalfoundries will get IBM’s existing semiconductor manufacturing operations in East Fishkill, N.Y., and Essex Junction, Vt. Once the deal closes next year, the chip foundry also will get IBM’s commercial microelectronics business, from ASICs to manufacturing to sales.

Accenture recently announced the launch of the Life Sciences Cloud for R&D. This is an analytics platform that brings together multiple internal and external data sources across clinical, safety, regulatory and operational functions. The goal is to speed clinical development, help improve patient outcomes, and create greater research and development efficiency. The foundation of the Life Sciences Cloud for R&D is an alliance between Accenture and Oracle.

Social recruiting is now used by 93 percent of recruiters across industries, according to Jobvite’s Social Recruiting Survey. This survey was completed by more than 1,800 recruiting and human resources professionals across industries and regions. The study also found that due to an increased demand for skilled workers, social is no longer enough on its own to attract and hire quality talent. Recruiters are taking a multi-channel approach, much like marketers, to find, engage and hire the best talent in this competitive job market.

SAP is branching out into the wearable computing realm. Vuzix Corp., a supplier of video eyewear and smart glasses for the consumer, commercial and entertainment markets, revealed on Oct. 17 that SAP has released two new applications for the company’s M100 Smart Glasses for Enterprise. Vuzix has been working with SAP to develop augmented reality applications using the M100 Smart Glasses. These applications would be used in enterprise areas that include warehousing and field service.
