Many users cant avoid Windows applications for one or two tasks, or a game—and thats where CodeWeavers Inc. comes in with its CrossOver platform. CrossOver 6.1, released May 15, enables enables Linux PCs and Apple Mactels to run more Windows applications and games, and with higher 3D performance, according to CodeWeavers.
CrossOver Linux 6.1 supports, among other programs, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Visio, and Internet Explorer; Adobe Photoshop; Macromedia Dreamweaver; Intuit Quicken and QuickBooks; and Lotus Notes. It also supports such popular games as World of Warcraft and Call of Duty 2.
Version 6.1 adds the ability for Outlook users to work remotely using RPC (Remote Procedure Call) over a Web connection. “There is also a wide range of other bug fixes and minor improvements in Outlook,” said CodeWeavers CEO Jeremy White in an announcement to current users.
In addition, version 6.1 boasts improved Windows 3D game performance. Much of this improvement is due to major update of DirectX support, according to White. “Weve made some noticeable gains in our game support,” he said. “We already ran World of Warcraft and Half Life 2, but weve now improved our speed and frame rates, as well as adding support for other important titles like Call of Duty 2.”
