Pervasive Software Inc. is releasing an extension for Pervasive.SQL—its embedded database—that will connect to remote Linux-based devices such as desktops, point-of-sale systems, set-top boxes and medical equipment. Remote Data Requester for Linux is now available as a free download from the companys site

According to company officials, more than 60 percent of recently surveyed customers who have downloaded a test edition of the Pervasive.SQL server engine for Linux said they have or will have a Linux/Pervasive.SQL application within the next year.

A Pervasive statement quoted Stephen Balacco, an analyst at Venture Development Corp., as saying that VDC has pegged Linux as the No. 1 operating system platform in 2002 supporting database management solutions for embedded system devices. “Going forward, we expect the use of Linux to expand and span all vertical markets in technologically advanced devices that increasingly will take on the issues of managing complex data with a database engine that is often tightly integrated with device-based applications,” he said.

Like other Pervasive products, the Remote Data Requester supports various versions of open-source and commercially available Linux flavors. The software also supports transactional and relational data access methods. It supports Linux kernel Version 2.4 or higher for connection to Pervasive.SQL 2000i SP4 and Pervasive.SQL V8 SP2 back-end servers. Pervasive.SQL Linux has Red Hat Ready 2.1 compliance, meaning it has application compatability for enterprises running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Pervasive.SQL V8 runs on Windows 2000, NT, ME, XP, 2003; NetWare 4, 5.1, 6 or higher; and on Linux.
